Ceci implique le d\u00e9veloppement de techniques afin de trouver des g\u00eetes de nickel, cuivre et les \u00e9l\u00e9ments du groupe du platine. Ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments sont normalement collect\u00e9s \u00e0 partir d&#8217;un magma silicat\u00e9 (roche fondue) par un liquide sulfur\u00e9 et non miscible. Le liquide sulfur\u00e9 se s\u00e9pare du magma juste comme l&#8217;huile se s\u00e9pare de l&#8217;eau. \u00c9tant donn\u00e9 que le liquide sulfur\u00e9 est plus lourd que le magma, il se concentre au fond de la chambre magmatique ou dans le conduit de la lave.<\/p>\n<p>Le but de ma recherche et celle de mes \u00e9tudiants est d&#8217;essayer de r\u00e9soudre quand et pourquoi le liquide sulfur\u00e9 s&#8217;est s\u00e9par\u00e9 du magma. Il est \u00e9galement important de comprendre sa localisation et celle des m\u00e9taux qu&#8217;il contient. Ceci implique des travaux de terrain afin de recueillir des \u00e9chantillons de roches et de cartographier la r\u00e9gion des g\u00eetes m\u00e9tallif\u00e8res. Les roches sont par la suite examin\u00e9es sous microscope et analys\u00e9es chimiquement afin de d\u00e9terminer la concentration ou la perte des m\u00e9taux. L&#8217;un des aspects important qu&#8217;il a \u00e9t\u00e9 possible de d\u00e9velopper \u00e0 l&#8217;Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Chicoutimi est la d\u00e9termination \u00e0 faibles taux de concentration (parties par milliards) des \u00e9l\u00e9ments du groupe de platine dans la plupart des types de roches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/portfolio.uqac.ca\/sarahjanebarnes\/files\/2024\/06\/anglais.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-456\" src=\"https:\/\/portfolio.uqac.ca\/sarahjanebarnes\/files\/2024\/06\/anglais.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"36\" height=\"25\" \/><\/a><strong> Research Interests<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trace element geochemistry<\/li>\n<li>Nickel, copper and platinum-group element ore deposits and partition coefficients of these elements<\/li>\n<li>Petrogenesis of komatiites, layered intrusions and granites<\/li>\n<li>Fe-Ti-V oxides deposits and partition coefficents of these elements<\/li>\n<li>Nelsonites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"titre2\"><em>Research<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My main research topics are the origin of mafic and ultramafic rocks and the ore deposits associated with them. Elements concentrated in these rocks types are Ni, Cu, PGE, Ti and V. These elements are normally collected from mafic magma by sulphide liquid or by oxide minerals.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of my research and that of my students is to try to resolve when and why the sulphide liquid or oxide minerals separates from the magma and where and why the sulphide liquid or oxide minerals with the metals collect. This implies fieldwork in order to gather rock samples and to draw maps of the region where the metal deposits occur. Rocks samples are collected and taken to the laboratory where they are cut and polished and then examined with a microscope. The rocks are also crushed and then their composition is determined by a variety of chemical methods.
